How it works
Follow one message from Alice to Bob.
Agora works differently from most messaging apps. This is what happens when Alice in Copenhagen sends a message to Bob in Kraków.
Step 1
Alice signs in with MitID
Agora receives a code confirming she is a verified person. It does not receive her name or her national ID.
Step 2
She picks the name Bob will see
Her chosen name lives on her phone and is shared only with the people she talks to. It is never uploaded to our servers.
Step 3
Her phone makes a private key
The key is created on her device and can never leave it. Agora signs a certificate saying the key belongs to a verified person, so Bob can trust it.
Step 4
The message goes straight to Bob
Alice's phone connects directly to Bob's. The message is encrypted and signed, so Bob knows it came from Alice and that nobody changed it on the way.
When a direct connection isn't possible. Some networks, like strict workplace or mobile networks, block direct connections. Then the message is passed along by a relay we run. The relay only forwards data that is already encrypted, so it cannot read it, and it stores nothing.
Step 5
Only Alice and Bob keep a copy
Each of them stores the conversation, encrypted, on their own devices. There is no copy anywhere else.
